House insurance protects your most important asset: your home. That’s why it’s so important to purchase a policy that’s right for you. There are two main types of house insurance in the UK: buildings insurance and home contents insurance. Buildings insurance protects you again-st structural damage to your property, as well as against damage to the home’s fixtures and fittings. Home contents insurance protects you against loss or damage to your personal possessions, usually the ones that are movable items.

Be aware that when you purchase house insurance in the UK you have to read the policy to understand what you are covered for. There are always exclusions included in insurance po-licies that outline what is not covered by the package. But if you want to be covered against more than what is included in the original policy, you have the choice to apply for extensions of cover. For an additional premium an extension will allow for coverage such as “accidental damage” and “all risks.”

House insurance can usually be paid in instalments if this is what you prefer, but know that if you don’t keep up on your payments cover will be stopped and you won’t be allowed to make a legitimate claim if you need to

How do you make a claim?

If you find yourself in an unfortunate situation and have to make a claim, there are certain steps you should take to ensure that you receive the money that is owed to you. If you be-come the victim of theft, malicious damage or vandalism for example, it is crucial that you report it to the police immediately. If you have lost credit or cheque cards you need to in-form the credit card company right away. Then decide which policy you want to make the claim under – you can even phone your policy’s hotline (if they have one) if you have any questions regarding how to make a claim.

Once you know where to claim, ask your insurance company for a claim form. Complete the form and return it as soon as possible with an estimate of the cost of repair or replacement. Make sure you keep any damaged property so that the insurance company can take a look
at it if need be. At this point the company will either pay your claim or send a claims inspec-tor to call on you to investigate the situation. Note that you have liability as a homeowner, which means that if it is found that you did not exercise reasonable care in the maintenance and management of your home you may not be able to make a claim.
